Health Prescription for My Mother
Author: Bing Bing
Dear Mother:
I have just finished writing Father’s prescription for health, and at once I hasten to write yours—not out of fear that you would feel neglected, but out of longing that you too may carry within you the same bright hope. That each day may unfold before you with the innocence of a child: simple, unburdened, and filled with joy.
Yet life presses upon us with its endless clamor—its noise, its distractions, its anxieties, its shadows of fear. The world conspires to rob our hearts of peace, to keep us restless and hurried, convinced that this turmoil is what life must be. But no, Mother, it need not be so.
There is another way of living. A heart may yet be a sanctuary of peace and joy. A soul may still learn forgiveness—toward others, and toward itself. We were not made to carry forever the burdens of years, nor the scars left by time, nor the regrets laid upon us by life. Our hearts may instead be filled with expectation and with gratitude.
For see how the seasons themselves whisper this truth:
The tender grass of spring, trembling with surprise.
The frogs of summer, echoing the laughter of childhood.
The harvest of autumn, brimming with song and abundance.
The snow of winter, falling in silence, proclaiming the majesty of the Creator.
Now winter is here again. In our homeland, snow has already fallen; here in Germany, the cold deepens, and one must wrap in down before stepping outside. Along the streets, the carols begin to rise:
“O holy night, the stars are brightly shining;
This is the night of our dear Savior’s birth.”
How beautiful a hymn! How tenderly it brings new hope into the frost of the season, how it lifts weary hearts with courage, with light, with promise.
And so, Mother, my wish for you is simple: health for your body, peace for your dwelling, joy for your spirit, and a smile that never fades. If I could offer you one prescription for life, it would be only this:
- Rejoice always.
- Pray without ceasing.
- Give thanks in everything.
These words I dedicate to you—my beloved mother, now gracefully crossing into the later years of life—and to all parents everywhere who walk gently into the autumn of their days.
With love everlasting,
Your Son
