The World Beyond: Dreams of Youth and Reality
Back in university, I loved listening to Chyi Chin’s The Outside World, often humming its melody to myself. At the time, my heart yearned for that world beyond—one filled with wonder and dreams. When Chyi Chin wrote this song, he was just sixteen, confined to a juvenile detention center. With the love and encouragement of his sister, Chyi Yu, he emerged from years of imprisonment and eventually embarked on a musical journey that led him to fame across both sides of the Taiwan Strait. Even today, he remains a shining presence on the music scene.
Now, I have long lived in that once-dreamed-of world beyond. And somehow, I had forgotten the taste of that song. But a few days ago, I stumbled upon a new rendition of The Outside World by Chyi Chin himself. His voice, as beautiful and captivating as in his youth, paired with a soulful harmonica solo, elevated the song to a new artistic height—and stirred in me a flood of memories.
Chyi Chin spent decades living out the love story he once wrote into song, and I, as a listener, have spent decades experiencing the world outside that his lyrics spoke of. The world outside is so splendid, and yet so helpless. After so many years of struggle in this world beyond, I suddenly realize—I have already become part of it, and there is no going back. That world of the past, the one I dreamed of time and again, that brought tears to my eyes and visited me in countless dreams, has drifted far, far away. Could it be that the song’s words foretold this all along?
In this world outside, so many promises vanish in the blink of an eye, so many wishes are scattered with the wind. Often, we find ourselves unable to look both ahead and behind. Living in this world afar, separated from our parents and loved ones, is a pain too real to put into words. However brilliant this outside world may be, it carries its share of sorrow. When we longed for its splendor, did we ever imagine we would have to bear its heavy weight?
“When you feel the world outside is full of sorrow,
I’ll still be here, patiently waiting for you.
Each time the sun sets in the west,
I’m always here, longing for you.
Though the sky may be filled with rain,
I still await your return.”
But what am I really waiting for? Am I waiting for the past to return to the present? Or am I hoping that I might return to the past? Or perhaps… it is not I who wait, but I who am being waited for—longed for—to one day return to that world I once left behind? Isn’t returning home the very reason we once left?
However vast the world outside may be, could it ever be greater than the longing within our hearts? Whether I am the one waiting or the one being waited for, as long as love fills the heart, the road ahead need not be feared. So let us keep forging ahead—undaunted—for the sake of that eternal hope and dream that lives within us.
