Windflower – Preface
Author: Little Sheep Bing Bing
I didn’t expect to be writing another preface so soon. The last one was already five years ago, written for my collection of essays, which also included a few of my poems. As I continued to write more essays, my poetry collection also grew. Eventually, I had no choice but to separate them into two volumes: one for essays and one for poetry. No wonder Taiwan’s Yu Guangzhong could effortlessly write both prose and poetry, filling volumes that brought people so much beauty. After all, poetry and prose are essentially one family.
Today, while talking with my family about the poetry collection, I mentioned the need for a beautiful title. So, we began a lively discussion, and soon we had twenty suggestions, all related to the wind. For instance, my mother suggested “Wind Chimes,” light and playful; my elder sister proposed “Spring Breeze,” warm and gentle; and my younger sister, with her rich imagination, came up with a string of names like “The Shadow of the Wind,” “The Whisper of the Wind,” “The Song of the Wind,” and “The Dance of the Wind,” all of which more or less captured the essence of what I wanted to express. My father, though silent, had probably already caught the scent of the wind and was wandering freely within it.
Yet, among all these suggestions, the name “Windflower” stood out. Although it has “wind” in its Chinese name (风信子), it bears no direct relation to the wind itself. The flower’s symbolic meanings include victory, competition, joy, love, happiness, admiration, resilience, life, and eternal remembrance—perfectly representing a positive attitude and philosophy toward life’s journey. So, let’s tentatively settle on this name, hoping that my small poetry collection can make readers feel like they are being bathed in a gentle spring breeze, with the song of wind chimes echoing in their hearts.
In the Bible, the wind often symbolizes the Holy Spirit, and those who believe in the Word receive life’s sustenance and eternal hope. The windflower grows toward the light, swaying gently in the wind, releasing a delicate fragrance that speaks to us of God’s grace. This is the original intention of Windflower.
