A Song from My Mother
Author: Bing Bing
Dear Sister,
How are you all doing? It feels as though such a long time has passed since we last spoke. In the twinkling of an eye, the old lunar year is about to slip away, and a new year is drawing near. As the ancients have said: “A lonely stranger in a foreign land, I think of my kin all the more on festive days.”
Wandering at the far ends of the earth, having tasted the warmth and coldness of human affairs, the sweetness and bitterness of life, I have come to feel ever more deeply that nothing is more precious than the bond of blood that ties us to our family. By chance, I recently heard Li Weijun’s erhu piece Mother Left Me a Song. My heart was filled with emotion, and I went on to watch the film The Small Street, in which the piece of music appears, and gained an even deeper understanding of its meaning. The melody lingered in the air for days, echoing without end, carrying me back to memories of childhood that would not fade.
Mother Left Me a Song is the folk tune I will perform on the erhu at the New Year’s Eve gathering. At first I had chosen Jasmine Flower, but this song welled up unbidden in my mind, refusing to leave. It speaks of our love for mother, and of our longing for her, and so it moves me deeply. I believe it will touch the hearts of all who hear it. A mother’s love is so real, so precious, unforgettable for a lifetime—yet even as we treasure it, we must ask: from where does such love flow?
Last week, while rehearsing with the piano, many people gathered around to listen. They were full of praise for the delicate, plaintive voice of the erhu. Even teenagers and young people in their twenties came and listened intently. These children, born and raised in a foreign land, may look like Germans and speak fluent German, yet flowing through their hearts is the blood of China. Their souls, like ours—exiled wanderers though we are—still beat with a deep love for the distant homeland.
May you all be well, in health and in peace!
With love,
Your brother
